An American in Paris
Inspired by the street sounds of 1920s Paris, yet tinged with nostalgia for the blues of his home country, “An American in Paris” is Gershwin’s tribute to the captivating city which was also home over the years to Saint-Saens, Debussy and Ravel. Festival Director and former Yehudi Menuhin School pupil, Wu Qian and fellow pianist Juho Pohjonen present a gorgeous programme combining the humour and lightness of Gershwin’s work with Debussy’s evocative early “Petite Suite”, Ravel’s fantastical and fiendishly tricky “Gaspard de la nuit”, and the lively cat-and-mouse interplay between two pianos of Saint-Saens’ Variations on a Theme of Beethoven.
