The Lyrical Cello
Gary Hoffman – cello, Wu Qian – piano. Acclaimed cellist Gary Hoffman makes a hugely welcome return to the Investec International Music Festival, performing alongside the festival's Founder, Artistic Director and former Menuhin School pupil, pianist Wu Qian. Marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's death, they perform his delightful Variations on Papageno's love-lorn theme from Mozart's Magic Flute, and the radiant and lyrical Third Cello Sonata, one of the first works of the genre to make the two instruments truly equal partners in a virtuosic dialogue which brims with expressiveness and high spirits. Two works by Mendelssohn complete this joyful programme, both which were written for the composer's own brother Paul, an amateur cellist of clearly very considerable talents - the youthful, spirited Variations Concertantes and his Cello Sonata No 1, a work which contrasts an exuberant vigour with graceful melody and an eloquent interplay between the soloists.
