Showcase concert: Tuesday 7 July

Generally we have not programmed big sonatas in the Summer Festival concerts, for various reasons. However, tonight we start with one of Schubert’s best loved sonatas, and follow it with a delightful collection of smaller pieces, written up to 100 years before and after Schubert’s death. All of them could be described as salon pieces; although they are not in chronological order, they provide a guide to the development of more intimate music during that 200-year period. Hubay’s Carmen Fantasy is sometimes performed with orchestra, but in essence it is a showpiece for the technical abilities of the violinist.

This concert will go live at 7.30pm on Tuesday 7 July.
